About this release
Overview
ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate covers a whole photographic workflow in one window with four modes across the top. Manage browses your drives directly with no import step, which is the single biggest practical difference from a catalogue-only application: point it at a folder and the images are on screen immediately, full size previews and all. Photos gives you a time based view of everything indexed. Develop is the non-destructive raw processor. Edit is a full layered pixel editor with masks and blend modes.
Because browsing needs no import, culling is genuinely fast. Open the card, rate and colour label at full screen speed, flag the rejects, and move or copy the keepers into your own folder structure, all before anything has been catalogued. If you want the catalogue features, indexing adds keywords, hierarchical categories, saved searches, face recognition, geotagging and metadata presets on top, but they are an addition rather than a gate you have to pass through first.
The Ultimate tier is the one with layers, and that is what separates it from the rest of the range. Develop handles the raw work non-destructively with exposure, tone curves, colour wheels, HSL, detail, lens corrections, perspective and a masking system with subject, sky and colour range selection. Edit then opens the result as a layered document with adjustment layers, layer masks, blend modes, text, healing and cloning, and support for external plugins. A composite that would otherwise mean exporting a TIFF into another application stays inside the same file.

Browse with no import step
Point it at any folder, local or on a network share, and the images are on screen with full previews immediately. Nothing is copied, moved or catalogued unless you ask for it.
Catalogue features when you want them
Keywords, hierarchical categories, colour labels, star ratings, saved searches, face recognition, geotagging and metadata presets, all optional on top of plain browsing.
Non-destructive raw development
Full raw processing with exposure, tone curves, colour wheels, HSL, detail, noise reduction, lens profiles and perspective correction, stored as instructions so the original file is never rewritten.
Layered pixel editor with masks
Adjustment layers, layer masks, blend modes, text layers, healing and cloning, and selection tools with subject and sky detection, all in the same application as the developer.
Batch processing across a whole shoot
Apply develop settings, rename by pattern, resize, convert format, adjust exposure and write metadata across hundreds of files in one operation with a preview of the result.
Plugin and colour management support
External editor round trips, third party plugin support in the edit mode, ICC profile handling, soft proofing and print layout with paper and profile selection.

Installation
Follow these in order
- Go offline before running the installer.
- Extract the archive to a local drive rather than a network share.
- Disable real time protection until the install has finished.
- Run setup as administrator and choose your interface language.
- Let the install complete and close the installer rather than launching from the final screen.
- Open the application once, set the database and cache locations in options, then re-enable protection.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- Put the database and preview cache on a fast drive. On a large library that choice affects perceived speed more than anything else in the settings.
- Develop settings live in a sidecar rather than in the file. Copy the sidecars along with the images when moving a shoot to another machine.
- Leave the update check disabled. An update replaces the activated components and the application reverts to trial behaviour.

Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Do I have to import my photos first?
- No. Browsing works on any folder immediately. Indexing is optional and only needed for the catalogue features such as saved searches and face recognition.
- What does Ultimate add over the lower tiers?
- Layers. The layered editor with masks, blend modes and adjustment layers is the Ultimate feature, along with the more advanced selection tools.
- Does it read raw files from my camera?
- Most bodies are covered by the bundled profiles. Very recent releases occasionally need a profile that arrives in a later build.
