About this release

Overview

This is the professional edition installation media with the service pack already integrated and activation applied to the image. It exists because a large amount of hardware never got drivers for anything later: instrument controllers, older CNC and print equipment, scientific capture cards, and a long tail of industrial software that was written against this generation and abandoned by its vendor. On those machines this is not nostalgia, it is the only system that works.

The professional edition is the one worth having. It includes the encrypting file system, remote desktop hosting rather than only outbound connections, domain join, group policy editing, backup to a network location, and the XP compatibility mode that runs a genuinely old application in its own virtual environment. The home editions strip all of that out and cannot be upgraded into it without a full reinstall.

The image is multilingual with the language chosen at the first setup screen, boots on both legacy BIOS and UEFI systems, and carries the standard recovery environment for repair installs and command line recovery. Storage drivers for common controllers are integrated so the installer sees the disk on machines where the original media would stall at the partition screen.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Encrypting file system and BitLocker

Per file encryption on the professional edition, with full volume encryption available on the machines whose firmware supports it.

Remote desktop host

Accept incoming sessions rather than only initiating them, which is what makes an unattended workshop machine manageable.

XP compatibility mode

Run an application that predates this generation inside its own virtual environment with seamless windows on the host desktop.

Group policy and local security policy

Configure the machine properly through policy rather than hunting through control panel pages, including update behaviour and removable media rules.

Domain join and network backup

Join a directory domain and back up to a network share, neither of which the home editions permit.

Multilingual image

Every interface language present in the one image and selected at the first setup screen.

Changed in this build

Version SP1 Build 7601

  • Service pack and the full set of released servicing updates integrated so first boot starts close to current.
  • Storage and chipset drivers slipstreamed so setup detects disks on controllers the original media did not know about.
  • USB three controller support integrated, which the original installer lacked entirely.
  • Recovery environment refreshed alongside the main image.
  • Component store cleaned of superseded entries, reducing the image size noticeably.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Back up everything on the target machine. A clean install erases the system drive.
  2. Write the ISO to a USB stick of 8 GB or larger using a tool that handles both boot paths.
  3. Boot from the stick through the firmware boot menu if the machine does not pick it up on its own.
  4. Choose your language and keyboard, then select custom install rather than upgrade.
  5. Delete the old system partitions for a genuinely clean install and select the unallocated space.
  6. Complete setup, then install chipset and storage drivers before anything else.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • Verify the checksum before writing. A truncated image fails partway through file expansion and wastes an hour.
  • This generation no longer receives security updates. Keep a machine running it off the open network or behind a firewall you control.
  • Install the chipset driver first on any machine newer than this system, otherwise device detection stays incomplete.

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Why would anyone install this now?
Hardware and industrial software that has no driver or build for anything later. That is the entire use case.
Does the activation survive updates?
Yes, it survives normal servicing updates and reboots.
Will it run in a virtual machine?
Yes, it installs in Hyper-V, VMware and VirtualBox, though you will want the guest additions for display drivers.
