Adobe Media Encoder 2026
Version 26.3.1.1 · Adobe Inc. · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #20 in the library
The queue that takes rendering off your editing machine's foreground, batching exports, transcoding whole folders into edit friendly formats and watching directories for anything new to process.

About this release
Overview
Media Encoder is the background render engine for the rest of the video pipeline. Send a sequence from Premiere Pro or a composition from After Effects and it encodes in its own process while you carry on cutting. Line up twenty exports overnight and it works through them without asking anything. That separation is the entire reason it exists and it is genuinely useful the first day you have a deadline.
The second job it does is ingest. Point it at a folder of camera files and it transcodes the lot to whatever intermediate your workflow uses, ProRes, DNxHD or a compressed proxy set, with LUTs applied, timecode preserved and filenames rebuilt to a pattern. Watch folders make that automatic: anything dropped into the folder is processed and moved on without a human touching it.
Format coverage is wide on both sides. It reads what the rest of the suite reads and writes H.264, H.265, ProRes, DNxHD and DNxHR, AVI, QuickTime, GIF, image sequences, MP3 and WAV. Presets carry every setting including cropping, scaling, effects, captions and metadata, and hardware encoding is used where the machine supports it, which on a modern GPU is a very large difference in wall clock time.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Background render queue
Encode in a separate process so the editing application stays interactive, with multiple jobs queued and prioritised.
Watch folders
Anything dropped into a monitored folder is encoded with a chosen preset and moved to an output location automatically.
Proxy and intermediate transcoding
Batch convert camera formats to ProRes, DNxHD or a proxy set with LUTs applied and metadata preserved.
Preset management
Save every export setting including effects, cropping, captions and metadata as a preset, and apply it across a whole queue.
Hardware accelerated encoding
NVENC, Quick Sync and AMF used where available, which cuts export times on long H.264 and H.265 deliverables substantially.
Wide output format coverage
H.264, H.265, ProRes, DNxHD and DNxHR, QuickTime, AVI, image sequences, animated GIF and audio only formats.
Changed in this build
Version 26.3.1.1
- Second concurrent encode on machines with a hardware encoder and spare cores.
- Improved H.265 quality at lower bitrates for delivery to compressed destinations.
- Queue now retries a failed item once before marking it failed and moving on.
- Better handling of variable frame rate source files from phones and screen recorders.
- Preset browser reorganised with searchable groups and per-destination folders.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Go offline.
- Extract the archive.
- Disable real time protection.
- Run setup as administrator.
- Close the installer when it finishes.
- Launch Media Encoder once so the suite registers it, then re-enable protection.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- Install this after Premiere or After Effects so the Dynamic Link hooks register correctly.
- It is also bundled inside the Premiere and After Effects installers. Only install separately if you use it on its own.
- Set the output location to a drive other than the source media if you want the fastest possible encodes.
System requirements
Minimum and recommended
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel or AMD quad core minimum, more cores directly reduce encode time |
| Memory | 16 GB recommended, 8 GB minimum |
| Graphics | GPU with 4 GB VRAM for accelerated effects rendering and hardware encoding |
| Storage | 8 GB for the application plus fast storage for output |
Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Do I need Premiere for it to be useful?
- No. It transcodes standalone files perfectly well and watch folders need nothing else.
- Does it render After Effects compositions?
- Yes, through Dynamic Link, so the comp does not have to be rendered out first.
- Why is my export not using the GPU?
- Check the preset. Hardware encoding is a per-preset setting and software encoding is the fallback default on some formats.
