Windows 7 Professional SP1 Super Lite
Version SP1 x64 · Microsoft · x64 bootable ISO · ranked #218 in the library
A stripped system image for machines that cannot carry a modern desktop, with the telemetry, the bundled applications and the search indexing taken out so an old laptop boots to a usable desktop in seconds.
Read the installation section below before you start. The order of the steps matters on this release.
About this release
Overview
This is a reduced Windows 7 Professional image aimed at hardware that struggles with anything newer: netbooks, old business laptops, single board industrial machines and anything running a spinning disk with two gigabytes of memory. Components that a modern desktop assumes and an old machine cannot afford have been removed rather than merely disabled, so the memory footprint at idle is a fraction of a stock install.
What comes out: the media applications, the games, the sample content, the tablet and handwriting components, the speech and accessibility subsystems beyond the basics, the search indexer, the backup and restore stack, and the diagnostic and telemetry services. What stays: the full driver store, networking, printing, the desktop shell with the standard control panel, the command line and scripting hosts, and the update mechanism, so it is still a functioning system rather than a demonstration.
The image is a single bootable ISO for x64 machines, written to a stick or a disc with any imaging tool. Installation is the normal Windows 7 sequence with no product key stage, and the system arrives activated on first boot. Because the component store has been trimmed, adding some optional features later is not possible without the original media, which is the trade being made in exchange for the footprint.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Very low idle footprint
Memory use at the desktop is far below a stock install, which is the difference between usable and unusable on a machine with 2 GB fitted.
Fast boot and shutdown
With the indexer, the diagnostic services and the scheduled maintenance stack removed, boot time on a mechanical disk drops dramatically.
Full driver store retained
Network, storage, display and printer drivers are all present, so most machines come up with working hardware straight after install.
Standard shell and control panel
It looks and behaves like Windows 7. Nothing has been replaced with a third party shell or a custom theme engine.
Pre-activated on first boot
No key entry step during setup and no activation prompt afterwards. The desktop arrives ready to use.
Single architecture ISO
One x64 image, bootable in both legacy and UEFI modes on hardware that supports it.
Changed in this build
Version SP1 x64
- Rebuilt against the final cumulative update rollup for the platform.
- Additional network and storage drivers integrated for common business laptop chipsets.
- Removed a further set of scheduled maintenance tasks that woke the disk on idle machines.
- Fixed a slipstream issue that caused the printer spooler to fail on some builds.
- Installation media now boots correctly on machines that only offer UEFI with compatibility support enabled.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Back up everything on the target machine. This process wipes the system partition.
- Write the ISO to a USB stick of 4 GB or larger with an imaging tool.
- Boot from the stick with the boot menu key for that machine.
- Delete the existing system partition at the drive selection step and install to the free space.
- Let it finish and reboot. No key is requested at any stage.
- Confirm the system properties page shows an activated state before installing anything else.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- This platform no longer receives security updates. Treat any machine running it as untrusted on a shared network.
- Some removed components cannot be added back later. Check that anything you need is present before committing a machine to it.
- Modern browsers no longer support this platform. Plan for an older browser build on anything used for the web.
System requirements
Minimum and recommended
| Operating system | Replaces the installed system, nothing required beforehand |
|---|---|
| Processor | Any x64 processor at 1 GHz or faster |
| Memory | 1 GB minimum, 2 GB comfortable |
| Graphics | Any card with a WDDM driver, or the basic display adapter |
| Storage | 12 GB free for the install, 20 GB recommended for headroom |
Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Will my applications still run?
- Anything from that era runs normally. Recent software increasingly requires a newer platform and will refuse to install.
- Does it include the update mechanism?
- Yes, though the update catalogue for this platform is closed, so it has very little left to fetch.
- Can I install it on a modern machine?
- Storage and chipset drivers for recent hardware do not exist for this platform. It is intended for old machines.
