Boris FX Mocha Pro 2026
Version 2026.5.0 · Boris FX · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #107 in the library
The planar tracker the visual effects trade defaults to, solving surfaces that a point tracker abandons and feeding the result into roto, removal, stabilisation, screen inserts and lens undistortion.

About this release
Overview
Point trackers fail constantly. The feature goes behind something, the surface has no texture, motion blur smears it, the lighting changes and the track slides off. Planar tracking works on the whole surface instead of on points, following the plane a region lies on even when individual features disappear, which is why a wall, a phone screen, a sign, a jacket panel or a forehead can be tracked reliably where nothing else will hold.
That tracking data then drives everything else in the application. Roto shapes inherit the motion so a matte is animated by the track rather than by hand on every frame. The remove module takes an object out of a shot by borrowing clean pixels from surrounding frames where the camera has revealed the background. Insert places a replacement screen or sign with correct perspective. Stabilise locks a region so a moving shot can be worked on flat and re-applied afterwards. Lens undistort straightens for a three dimensional integration and puts the distortion back on output.
It ships as both a standalone application and a plugin for the major hosts, so it fits whichever way a facility works. The plugin keeps everything inside the host project with no file exchange, while the standalone is the better environment for a heavy roto session where you want the whole screen. Tracking and shape data export to every common format, so a solve done here goes into whichever three dimensional or compositing package the shot ends up in.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Planar tracking
Track a surface rather than a set of points, holding through occlusion, motion blur and lighting change where point trackers give up.
Roto driven by the track
Shapes follow the tracked plane so a matte animates itself, with per-point offsets, feathering and edge motion blur where needed.
Object removal
Take an element out of a plate using clean background revealed in other frames, with the result tracked back onto the moving shot.
Screen insert and match move
Replace a screen, sign or label with correct perspective and edge handling, including reflection and grain matching passes.
Stabilise and lens undistortion
Lock a region flat to work on it, then reapply the original motion, and remove or restore lens distortion for three dimensional integration.
Standalone and plugin
Runs on its own or inside After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, Resolve and OFX hosts with data exchange in both directions.
Changed in this build
Version 2026.5.0
- Tracking solver rebuilt for better retention on low texture and heavily motion blurred surfaces.
- Removal module quality improved on plates where the revealed background is only partially clean.
- GPU acceleration extended across the roto rendering path.
- New shape tools including a magnetic spline that snaps to edges while drawing.
- Export formats updated for the current versions of the major three dimensional packages.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Close every host application before starting.
- Extract the archive to a local drive.
- Disable real time protection.
- Run setup as administrator and tick both the standalone and the hosts you want the plugin in.
- Apply the included licence step after the files are copied.
- Launch the standalone once to confirm it opens, then restore protection.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- The plugin and the standalone share one licence component. Installing one without it leaves the other unlicensed too.
- Cache location defaults to the system drive. Move it before a long roto session.
- Block the updater. An update replaces the licensed binaries across every host.
System requirements
Minimum and recommended
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit |
|---|---|
| Host application | Optional. Required only if you want the plugin rather than the standalone |
| Processor | Intel or AMD multicore, six cores or more recommended |
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for long shots at high resolution |
| Graphics | GPU with 4 GB VRAM for the accelerated render path |
Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Is this the same as the Mocha bundled with After Effects?
- No. The bundled version is tracking only. This adds removal, insert, stabilise, undistortion and the full shape toolset.
- Can I export a track to a three dimensional package?
- Yes, camera solves and corner pin data export to every common format.
- Does the plugin need the standalone installed?
- No, but installing both is the normal choice and they share the same licence.
