About this release

Overview

EDIUS built its reputation on one thing: real time playback of mixed format, mixed resolution, mixed frame rate footage on the same timeline without rendering anything first. Drop standard definition, high definition and 4K clips from different cameras onto adjacent tracks and it plays. For news and fast turnaround work where the deadline is measured in minutes, that behaviour is the whole argument.

The interface is dense and keyboard driven, built for people who edit all day rather than for a first time user. Trimming is fast and precise with dedicated modes, the source and record windows behave the way a tape editor expects, and the layout is fully rearrangeable across multiple monitors. Nothing about it is fashionable and everything about it is quick once the shortcuts are in your hands.

Format coverage is unusually broad, including the professional broadcast formats that consumer oriented editors ignore, and it handles growing files so an edit can start while a recording is still being captured. Colour correction includes primary and secondary tools with scopes, the title tool is a full graphics application in its own right, and export covers file based delivery, disc authoring and direct output to broadcast hardware.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Real time mixed format timeline

Different codecs, resolutions and frame rates on the same timeline playing without transcoding or pre-rendering, which is the defining feature of the application.

Fast keyboard driven trimming

Dedicated trim modes with ripple, roll, slip and slide, all bound to keys, designed for editors working against a clock.

Broad professional format support

The broadcast formats other editors skip, alongside the consumer codecs, including growing file support for editing during capture.

Colour correction with scopes

Primary and secondary correction, curves, three way wheels and a full scope set, applied as filters on clips or tracks.

Integrated title and graphics tool

A complete titling application with styles, animation and templates, launched from the timeline and rendering straight back to it.

Hardware and file based output

Export to file formats, author to disc, or output live to broadcast hardware over the supported interfaces.

Changed in this build

Version 9.20.3340

  • Additional camera formats added to the native decoder set.
  • Improved hardware accelerated decoding of long GOP footage on current processors.
  • Timeline rendering scheduler reworked to keep playback smooth under heavier effect loads.
  • Title tool gained new animation presets and better font handling.
  • Fixed several project loading issues on very long timelines with many nested sequences.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Disconnect the machine from the network before installing.
  2. Extract the archive to a folder with several gigabytes free.
  3. Pause real time protection.
  4. Run setup as administrator and install the codec components when prompted.
  5. Apply the included activation before launching for the first time.
  6. Open the application, confirm no licensing dialogue appears, then restore protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • Install the bundled codec pack. Without it several professional formats will not decode.
  • The licensing component must not be updated afterwards, it replaces what the activation modifies.
  • Project files are not backward compatible. Save a copy before opening an older project in this release.

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Does it really not need transcoding?
For the supported formats, yes. That is the design goal and it holds on a machine with enough processor headroom.
Can it read projects from other editors?
Through interchange formats like AAF and EDL rather than natively. Effects do not survive the trip.
Is hardware output required?
No. It runs entirely file based. The hardware interfaces are optional for broadcast environments.
