TechSmith Camtasia
Version 26.2.0.19099 · TechSmith Corporation · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #94 in the library
Screen recording and timeline editing built for training material, where a capture, a set of callouts, a zoom path and a quiz all get assembled in one place and exported as something a learner can actually follow.

About this release
Overview
Camtasia exists because editing a screen recording in a general purpose video editor is miserable. Cursor paths need smoothing, small text needs zooming into, clicks need highlighting, and dead air between steps needs cutting without the audio jumping. Camtasia handles all of that as first class features rather than as effects you build by hand, which is why an hour of raw capture turns into a finished lesson in an afternoon instead of a week.
The recorder captures screen, webcam, system audio and microphone as separate tracks, along with cursor position data as metadata rather than baked into the pixels. That last part is what makes the cursor effects work later: you can smooth the path, enlarge the pointer, add a click ring and even change the cursor entirely long after the recording is finished. Recording a specific window, a region or a full multi-monitor layout all work, with frame rate and quality set per source.
On the timeline you get behaviours and animations that suit instruction rather than entertainment. SmartFocus proposes zoom and pan moves based on where the activity was, annotations and arrows snap to the grid, transitions are short and unfussy, and captions can be typed, imported or generated from speech. Interactive elements including hotspots and quizzes export alongside the video for anything that has to report back to a learning platform.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Multi-source screen recorder
Screen, webcam, system audio and microphone captured to separate tracks, with cursor data stored as metadata for later editing.
Cursor effects and SmartFocus
Smooth the pointer path, enlarge it, add click highlights, and let the tool propose zoom and pan moves around the areas where activity happened.
Annotations, callouts and shapes
A stocked set of arrows, boxes, blur regions, spotlights and text callouts that snap to a grid and animate in with a single behaviour.
Captions and speech to text
Generate captions from the narration, edit them in a proper caption panel, or import an existing file, then burn them in or export them separately.
Quizzes and interactive hotspots
Insert multiple choice and short answer questions, plus clickable hotspots that jump within the video or open a link, exported for learning platforms.
Asset library and templates
Motion backgrounds, intros, lower thirds, music beds and icon sets included offline, plus reusable templates so a series keeps one look.
Changed in this build
Version 26.2.0.19099
- Rebuilt recorder with lower overhead on high refresh rate and multi-monitor setups.
- Speech to text captioning accuracy improved on technical vocabulary and accented narration.
- New template system for series work, with placeholders that swap media without breaking the layout.
- Faster export using hardware encoders where the machine has one available.
- Timeline now supports track groups nested more than two levels deep.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Go offline before you begin.
- Extract the archive to a local drive.
- Turn off real time protection for the duration.
- Run setup as administrator and accept the default component selection.
- Do not launch the application from the finish screen, close the installer instead.
- Start Camtasia, confirm the trial banner is absent, then re-enable protection.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- The recorder needs to run as administrator to capture windows that themselves run elevated.
- Keep the update check disabled. A point release replaces the licensed components.
- Captures default to the user video folder. Move that to a fast drive before recording anything long.

Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Can it record system audio and a microphone at once?
- Yes, and each lands on its own track so you can balance them independently.
- Does it export for a learning platform?
- Yes, it produces a package with the quiz reporting and hotspot data alongside the video file.
- Will old projects open?
- Yes, projects from several previous versions convert on open and save as a new file.
