About this release

Overview

MATLAB is built on the idea that the thing you are calculating with is usually an array. Indexing, slicing, broadcasting, linear algebra and elementwise operations are all first class syntax rather than library calls, which is why a page of loops in a general purpose language collapses to three lines here. The interactive workspace keeps every variable visible and inspectable while you work, so an analysis is something you build up in the command window and then capture in a script once it works.

The editor, the live script format and the debugger make up the working environment. A live script interleaves code, formatted text, equations and the figures the code produced in one document, which is how a piece of analysis gets handed to someone else without a separate report. Breakpoints, conditional breakpoints, variable inspection at a paused prompt and step through execution all behave the way anyone coming from another environment expects.

This installation carries the toolbox set rather than the base product alone. Signal processing, image processing, control systems, optimisation, statistics and machine learning, curve fitting, symbolic maths, parallel computing and the model based design environment are included and licensed. Simulink opens block diagram models, simulates them, and generates code from them, which is the half of the product that engineering teams actually build their workflow around.

  • Editor now supports multiple cursors and column selection, which the previous release did not.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Disconnect from the network before you begin, the installer will otherwise attempt to contact the licence servers.
  2. Extract the archive to a drive with at least 40 GB free, this is the largest package in the catalogue.
  3. Disable real time protection, scanning a twelve gigabyte extraction will take longer than the install itself.
  4. Run the setup executable as administrator and choose the installation folder and the toolboxes you want.
  5. Apply the included licensing step before first launch, following the readme order exactly.
  6. Start MATLAB, run the version command at the prompt to confirm the toolboxes are present, then restore protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

From whoever packed it

  • You do not need every toolbox. Deselecting the ones you will not use cuts the install size by more than half.
  • Keep the licence file where the installer put it. Moving it breaks the toolbox checkout even though the base product still starts.
  • Do not let it check for updates. An update replaces the licensing component.
