About this release

Overview

Office 2013 Professional Plus is the release for genuinely constrained machines. It installs in under three gigabytes, runs in a gigabyte of memory without complaint, and starts faster on a mechanical drive than any suite released after it. On a netbook, a thin client, an old office machine that only has to produce letters and invoices, or a virtual machine you want to keep small, it remains the practical choice.

Feature wise it is a complete professional suite rather than a cut down one. Excel here introduced Flash Fill, the recommended chart and pivot table suggestions, the timeline slicer, and the first version of the data model that later releases built on. Word gained the read mode, PDF editing directly in the application, and the object alignment guides. Outlook picked up the peek panes and the conversation view that every later version kept.

The professional line-up means Access and Publisher are present alongside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. Both architectures ship in one archive and are chosen at setup, and every interface and proofing language available for the release is bundled rather than downloaded. Nothing in it changes after install, which on a machine that has to keep behaving identically is the entire point.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Very light footprint

Under three gigabytes installed and comfortable in a gigabyte of memory, which is what makes it usable on hardware that later suites will not tolerate.

Complete professional set

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher and OneNote, the full line-up rather than a consumer subset.

Flash Fill and pattern recognition in Excel

Type an example of the output you want in the column beside your data and the rest fills itself, which handles most one off text splitting jobs without a formula.

PDF editing in Word

Open a PDF directly in Word, edit the text as a document and save it back out, without a separate converter in the middle.

Full VBA and macro support

The complete Visual Basic editor and object model, unchanged, for documents and workbooks carrying inherited automation.

Both architectures bundled

One archive covering 32 and 64-bit, with the language set chosen during setup rather than fetched afterwards.

Changed in this build

Version 15.0.4569.1506

  • Service pack and released servicing updates integrated into the installer.
  • Both architectures merged into a single archive.
  • Activation applied during setup with no separate step afterwards.
  • Fixed a setup failure on machines carrying registry entries from a removed later suite.
  • Proofing tools refreshed for several additional languages.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Uninstall any other office suite first, including leftovers from a later version.
  2. Go offline before running setup.
  3. Extract the archive and open the folder for your chosen architecture.
  4. Disable real time protection.
  5. Run setup as administrator and select the applications and languages you want.
  6. Launch Excel once, confirm the account page shows an activated product, then re-enable protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • The interface uses a very flat, high contrast style. It looks dated next to later releases and behaves identically.
  • Do not mix architectures on one machine, they cannot coexist.
  • Keep updates off. A servicing update from a later channel will attempt an upgrade and reset the activation state.

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Is it still worth installing?
On constrained hardware, yes. On a current workstation there is no reason to choose it over a later perpetual release.
Does it open files from newer versions?
Yes, the document formats are the same generation and open without conversion.
Is Access included?
Yes, this is the professional line-up so Access and Publisher are both present.
