Adobe Substance 3D Painter
Version 12.1.0.552 · Adobe Inc. · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #68 in the library
Texture painting for 3D models where you paint straight onto the mesh in a lit viewport and the program generates every map the render engine needs, which is how a grey model becomes a convincing worn metal or scuffed leather surface.

About this release
Overview
Substance 3D Painter is where a model gets its surface. You import a mesh, paint on it directly in a viewport that shows the result lit in real time, and the program produces the full set of texture maps a modern render engine expects: base colour, roughness, metalness, normal and height, all coherent with each other. Instead of guessing at flat maps in a 2D editor and hoping they look right when applied, you see the material on the model as you work.
Its real power is the smart material and mask system. A smart material carries a whole layered surface, wear on edges, dirt in crevices, variation across a panel, and adapts itself to the geometry it is dropped onto using the model's own curvature, ambient occlusion and position. That means a believable worn surface is a starting point rather than hours of hand painting, and every layer stays editable so the look can be pushed without repainting from scratch.
It fits into a production pipeline cleanly. It reads the mesh maps baked from a high resolution sculpt, exports texture sets in presets tuned for every major render engine and game engine, and keeps the whole project non-destructive so a change late in the process does not mean starting again. This build installs the full application with the starter material and smart material library present and activated.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Paint directly on the model
Work in a lit viewport that shows the surface in real time, so what you paint is what the render will show.
Generates every map
Produces base colour, roughness, metalness, normal and height together, all coherent, from one painting session.
Smart materials and masks
Layered surfaces that adapt to the model's curvature and occlusion, so believable wear and dirt are a starting point rather than hand work.
Baking built in
Bake mesh maps from a high resolution sculpt directly inside the application to drive the smart masks.
Non-destructive layers
Every layer, effect and mask stays editable, so a late change is an adjustment rather than a repaint.
Engine ready export
Texture set export presets tuned for the major render engines and game engines, so maps land ready to use.
Changed in this build
Version 12.1.0.552
- New smart materials added to the starter library.
- Faster baking on high polygon meshes.
- Improved viewport display accuracy for height and displacement.
- Export presets updated for current render and game engines.
- Better handling of models with many texture sets.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Go offline.
- Extract the archive to a local drive.
- Disable real time protection.
- Run setup as administrator and complete the install.
- Apply the included activation step before first launch.
- Open the application, confirm the library is present, then re-enable protection.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- The starter library is bundled. Anything from the online asset service is not part of this build.
- GPU VRAM is the main limit on texture resolution. 4K sets need a card with plenty of memory.
- Block the update check so a service release does not undo the activation.
System requirements
Minimum and recommended
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit |
|---|---|
| Processor | 64-bit Intel or AMD, quad core or better |
| Memory | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for high resolution texturing |
| Graphics | GPU with 4 GB VRAM minimum, 8 GB recommended for 4K texture sets |
| Storage | 8 GB for the application plus project and library space |
Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Does it bake its own mesh maps?
- Yes, baking is built in, so a high resolution sculpt can drive the smart masks without a separate baker.
- Which engines can it export to?
- Presets cover the major render and game engines, and custom export presets can be built for anything else.
- Is the material library included?
- Yes, the starter and smart material library installs locally with this build.
