Autodesk 3ds Max 2027

Version 2027.2 · Autodesk Inc. · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #39 in the library

A polygon modelling, animation and rendering package that architectural visualisation and game art studios have built their pipelines on, with a modifier stack that keeps every operation editable after the fact.

About this release

Overview

The modifier stack is the idea the whole application is organised around. Every operation you apply to an object sits on a list above it, stays editable, can be reordered, disabled or removed, and can be collapsed only when you decide to. That means a model is a recipe rather than a final state, and a change to the base geometry propagates up through everything applied on top of it. Nothing else in the field works quite the same way.

Modelling covers both polygon and spline workflows. Editable poly with the full edit set, loops and rings, symmetry, turbo smoothing and retopology tools handles hard surface and organic work alike. Spline modelling with lathe, loft, sweep and extrude covers everything that starts as a profile, which is most architectural detail. The parametric primitives, the compound objects and the boolean operations fill in the rest.

On the animation and rendering side it carries a complete character rig system with bones, skinning, inverse kinematics and the character animation toolkit, alongside particle systems, physics simulation and hair. Rendering runs through the bundled physically based engine with global illumination, and the scene structure exports cleanly to every major game engine and pipeline format, which is why it sits where it does in studio workflows.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Modifier stack

Every operation stays live on a per object list, reorderable and editable, so the model remains a set of instructions rather than baked geometry.

Polygon and spline modelling

Editable poly with loops, rings, symmetry and subdivision alongside spline based lathe, loft and sweep tooling for profile driven detail.

Character rigging and animation

Bones, skinning with editable weights, inverse kinematics, constraints and the character animation toolkit, with a full curve editor for timing.

Particles, physics and hair

Event driven particle systems, rigid and soft body simulation, cloth and a hair and fur system, all keyframable alongside everything else.

Physically based rendering

The bundled render engine with global illumination, physical materials, real world lighting units and a frame buffer with post processing.

Pipeline interchange

Import and export across the major interchange formats with scene structure, materials and animation preserved for game engine and visualisation pipelines.

Changed in this build

Version 2027.2

  • Viewport rendering rebuilt for faster navigation on scenes with several million polygons.
  • Retopology tools improved with better edge flow on scanned and sculpted meshes.
  • Smart extrude extended to handle more edge cases without producing non manifold geometry.
  • Scene converter updated so legacy materials from older releases translate to the physical material cleanly.
  • Faster startup and lower memory footprint with a large plugin set installed.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Disconnect from the network before starting, the installer otherwise tries to reach the licensing service.
  2. Extract the archive to a drive with at least 30 GB free.
  3. Disable real time protection completely for the duration.
  4. Run the setup executable as administrator and choose the components you want.
  5. Apply the licensing step before first launch, following the readme order precisely.
  6. Start the application, confirm the version in the help dialog, then restore protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • Block the licensing service in your firewall afterwards. An online check will undo the applied state.
  • Installing alongside another Autodesk product shares a licensing component. Install this one last if you are setting up several.
  • The bundled material and asset libraries are optional. Skip them at setup if space is short and add them later.

System requirements

Minimum and recommended

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor64-bit multicore with SSE 4.2, eight cores or more recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for production scenes
GraphicsGPU with 8 GB VRAM and a certified professional or current consumer driver
Storage30 GB of free space, SSD strongly recommended

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Does it work with third party renderers?
Yes, the plugin renderers install against it normally and appear in the render setup dialog.
Can it open scenes from older releases?
Yes, with a converter pass for legacy materials that the scene converter handles in one action.
Is a professional graphics card required?
No. A current consumer card with enough memory performs well, the certified drivers only matter for support.
