BlueStacks 5

Version 5.22.166.1003 · BlueStacks Systems · Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #182 in the library

An Android runtime for the desktop that gives phone-only applications a keyboard, a mouse and as much memory as your machine can spare, with per-instance control so several sessions run side by side without stepping on each other.

About this release

Overview

BlueStacks runs a full Android environment inside a window on your desktop. Applications that were only ever published for phones install and run as if they were on hardware, except they get a real keyboard, a mouse, a large display and whatever CPU and memory you assign them. For anything that involves repetitive input or long sessions, the difference between a touchscreen and a proper input setup is not subtle.

The engine in the 5 series was rewritten for lower memory overhead than the previous generation, which is what makes multiple instances practical. The instance manager clones a configured environment in a few seconds, and each clone gets its own storage, its own account state and its own resource allocation. You can run four at once on a mid-range machine and assign them different core counts so one heavy session does not starve the others.

Input mapping is where most of the configuration time goes and the tooling is thorough. You bind keys to screen positions, build directional pads out of WASD, define tap-and-hold gestures, set up scroll wheel zoom, and save the whole layout per application. A macro recorder captures a sequence of taps and delays and replays it on a hotkey. This build has the premium tier unlocked with the advertising panel and the sponsored application feed stripped out entirely.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Multi-instance with independent state

Clone a configured environment as many times as memory allows. Each instance keeps separate storage and separate accounts, and CPU and RAM are assigned per instance rather than shared blindly.

Keyboard and mouse mapping

Bind any key to any screen coordinate, build movement pads, define hold and swipe gestures, and set mouse wheel behaviour. Layouts save per application and can be exported.

Macro recorder

Record a sequence of inputs with timing preserved and bind it to a hotkey. Loop counts and delays are editable afterwards in a list view rather than re-recorded.

Performance profiles

Switch between balanced, high performance and low memory profiles, or set core count, memory ceiling, resolution and frame rate cap manually per instance.

Shared folder with the host

A mapped directory moves files between Windows and the Android environment without any transfer step. Screenshots and recordings land straight on the desktop.

Graphics backend selection

DirectX, OpenGL and Vulkan backends are all available. Switching backend fixes most rendering problems on older adapters in one step.

Changed in this build

Version 5.22.166.1003

  • Instance manager rebuilt with a grid view showing live resource usage per running instance.
  • Vulkan backend promoted out of preview and set as the default on adapters that report full support.
  • Memory footprint of an idle instance reduced by roughly a fifth compared with the previous point release.
  • Key mapping editor now shows an overlay of every existing binding while you place a new one.
  • Faster cold start, with the Android layer preloading in the background after the launcher opens.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Enable virtualisation in your firmware setup if it is not already on. Performance without it is poor.
  2. Extract the archive and pause real time protection before running setup.
  3. Run the installer as administrator and pick an install location with room to grow.
  4. Wait for the first launch to finish provisioning the environment, which takes a few minutes.
  5. Open the settings panel and assign core count and memory for your machine.
  6. Restore protection once the first session has opened correctly.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • Hyper-V compatibility mode is included for machines that cannot disable it. Select it in settings if the engine refuses to start.
  • The sponsored application feed and advertising panel are removed. The home screen is empty on first run.
  • Assign no more than half your physical cores to a single instance or the host becomes unresponsive under load.

System requirements

Minimum and recommended

Operating systemWindows 7 SP1 or newer, 64-bit
ProcessorIntel or AMD with virtualisation support enabled in firmware
Memory4 GB minimum, 8 GB recommended, 16 GB for multiple instances
GraphicsAny adapter with up to date drivers, dedicated GPU recommended for heavy titles
Storage10 GB of free space on an SSD, more if you run several instances

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Why is performance poor on my machine?
Almost always virtualisation being disabled in firmware. Check that first, then try switching the graphics backend.
How many instances can I run?
Memory is the limit. Budget roughly two gigabytes per idle instance and more for anything demanding.
Does it install anything at startup?
No. The background service is set to manual and only starts when you open the launcher.
