Chaos V-Ray for 3ds Max

Version 7.30.02 · Chaos Group · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #72 in the library

The rendering engine that produces the photoreal stills the architecture and product visualisation trade is built on, installed as a plugin into 3ds Max so the scene, the materials and the lights all stay where you built them.

About this release

Overview

V-Ray is the renderer that turned architectural and product visualisation into the polished business it is. It installs into 3ds Max as a plugin and replaces the built in renderer, adding its own physically based materials, lights and cameras, and a rendering core that resolves global illumination, reflection, refraction and depth of field the way a real camera and real light would. The images it produces are the reason it became the default in so many visualisation studios.

The practical strength is that it is both fast and controllable. It renders on the processor, on the graphics card, or on both at once, so a studio can use whatever hardware it has. The interactive renderer updates a preview as you move a light or tweak a material, which turns lighting a scene from a guess and wait cycle into something you steer directly. When it is time for final frames, the production renderer and the denoiser bring a clean image down to a fraction of the time a brute force render would take.

It carries a full material and light toolkit. Physically based materials with layered coatings, real world light units, a sun and sky system, proxy geometry for scattering millions of instances, fur and hair, and a frame buffer with colour grading and light mix built in so a render can be balanced after the fact without re-rendering. This build installs the plugin for 3ds Max with the material library and activation in place.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Physically based rendering

Global illumination, reflection, refraction and depth of field resolved the way real light and a real camera behave.

GPU and CPU rendering

Render on the processor, the graphics card or both together, so a studio uses whatever hardware it has.

Interactive preview

A live preview updates as you move a light or adjust a material, so lighting is steered rather than guessed.

Denoiser

Bring a clean final frame down to a fraction of a brute force render time without visible artefacts.

Proxy geometry and scattering

Instance millions of objects such as trees or crowds without the scene becoming unmanageable.

Frame buffer with light mix

Colour grade and rebalance the individual lights in the render after it finishes, without rendering again.

Changed in this build

Version 7.30.02

  • Faster GPU rendering on recent cards with improved memory handling.
  • Denoiser quality improved on interior scenes with many small lights.
  • Material library expanded with additional physically based presets.
  • Better handling of very large scattered instance counts.
  • Frame buffer light mix workflow refined for quicker balancing.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Install and close 3ds Max first so the installer can find it.
  2. Go offline.
  3. Extract the archive.
  4. Disable real time protection.
  5. Run setup as administrator and install the plugin for your 3ds Max version.
  6. Apply the included activation step, open 3ds Max, confirm V-Ray is the active renderer, then re-enable protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • The plugin version must match a supported 3ds Max version. Check before installing over a working setup.
  • GPU rendering needs a card with plenty of VRAM. Below the recommended memory it will fall back to the processor.
  • Block the licensing service from updating so the activation is not reset.

System requirements

Minimum and recommended

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit
Host applicationA supported version of Autodesk 3ds Max
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for heavy scenes
GraphicsGPU with 8 GB VRAM recommended for GPU rendering, current driver required
Storage4 GB for the plugin and material library

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Does it render on the GPU?
Yes, on the GPU, the CPU or both at once, chosen per render.
Is the material library included?
Yes, the physically based material library installs locally with this build.
Which 3ds Max versions are supported?
The current and several recent releases. An older host needs an older plugin build.
