About this release

Overview

The reason to keep an offline installer of the browser is deployment. The download page hands you a small bootstrapper that fetches the real package over the connection you may not have yet, which is useless on a freshly installed machine sitting on a network that needs a login page opened in a browser first. This is the complete installer, which solves that in one step.

As a browser it needs little explanation. It renders what the web is built against, the developer tools are the reference implementation most tutorials assume, the extension catalogue is the largest available, and the process isolation model means one misbehaving tab does not take the rest down with it. Profile separation keeps work and personal browsing in genuinely separate sessions with their own cookies, extensions and history.

The build here is the standard release channel installer for the whole machine rather than a single user, which is the right choice for a shared or managed machine. Policy templates are included for anyone who wants to configure the browser through group policy: setting a homepage, controlling the extension allowance, disabling the background updater, or pointing it at an internal proxy configuration.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Complete offline installer

The full package rather than a bootstrapper, so it installs on a machine with no connection available yet.

Machine wide installation

Installs for all users rather than into one profile, which is what a shared or managed machine needs.

Process isolation per tab

Each tab and extension in its own process, so a crash or a runaway page does not take down the whole session.

Profile separation

Multiple profiles with their own cookies, extensions, history and settings, switchable without signing anything in and out.

Developer tools

The element inspector, network panel, performance profiler, device emulation and console that most web tutorials are written against.

Policy templates included

Group policy templates in the archive for configuring homepage, extension policy, update behaviour and proxy settings centrally.

Changed in this build

Version 151.0.7922.138

  • Rendering and script engine performance improvements across the board.
  • Memory use reduced on sessions with a very large number of open tabs through more aggressive background tab suspension.
  • Security fixes across the rendering engine and the sandbox.
  • Download manager reworked with a persistent panel rather than a transient bar.
  • Improved handling of extension permission prompts, showing exactly which sites an extension will read.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Extract the archive.
  2. Run the installer as administrator for a machine wide installation.
  3. Let setup complete, no protection changes are needed for this one.
  4. Open the browser once and decline the default browser prompt if you want another one handling links.
  5. If you do not want the background updater, apply the included policy template or disable its scheduled tasks.
  6. Sign-in is optional and can be skipped entirely, the browser works fully without it.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • The background update service is installed by default. Disable its scheduled tasks if you want the version to stay fixed.
  • A machine wide install and a per user install can end up side by side. Remove any existing per user copy first.
  • The policy templates in the archive are optional and only matter on a managed machine.

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Why not just download it normally?
Because the normal download is a bootstrapper that needs a connection, which is exactly what you do not have on a fresh machine.
Is this the standard release channel?
Yes, the stable channel build rather than a preview.
Does it need an account?
No. Sign-in only enables synchronisation and everything else works without it.
