Hard Disk Sentinel Pro

Version 6.40.3 · Janos Mathe · Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 · ranked #113 in the library

Drive health and temperature monitoring that reads the underlying attributes and turns them into a plain health percentage, warning about a failing disk while there is still time to copy the data off it.

About this release

Overview

Every drive reports diagnostic attributes, and almost nobody reads them until something has already gone wrong. This tool reads them continuously across every attached disk, including internal drives, external enclosures, solid state drives with their own wear metrics, and drives behind most common controllers, and reduces the whole picture to a health percentage and a performance percentage with a text description of what is actually wrong.

The value is in the warning time. Reallocated sectors accumulating, pending sectors that have not been reallocated yet, rising temperature, increasing error rates, and on solid state media the remaining write endurance, all of them trend before a drive stops working outright. The application watches the trend rather than a single reading and can be set to alert by message, sound, email or by running a command when a threshold is crossed.

Alongside the monitoring it includes the tools for acting on what it finds. Surface tests covering read, write and refresh passes, a disk cleanup and reinitialise for reallocating weak sectors, drive performance benchmarking, acoustic and power management configuration, and backup triggering on an alert. Reports export for a whole fleet of machines, which is why it turns up on service benches as often as on individual workstations.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Continuous health and performance monitoring

Reads the diagnostic attributes of every attached drive and reduces them to a health and performance percentage with a plain description of the problem.

Solid state endurance tracking

Remaining write endurance, total bytes written and wear levelling status for solid state media, which the mechanical attributes do not cover.

Temperature history and alerting

Records temperature over time per drive and alerts on a threshold, with the daily maximum retained so an intermittent problem is visible.

Configurable alerts

On screen message, sound, email, network message or a command executed when a threshold is crossed, so a backup can be triggered automatically.

Surface tests and repair passes

Read, write, refresh and reinitialise passes over the surface to detect weak sectors and force reallocation before data is lost.

Fleet reporting

Export health reports for many machines, which is how a service department tracks which drives are due for replacement.

Changed in this build

Version 6.40.3

  • Support added for recent solid state controllers and their vendor specific attributes.
  • Improved detection of drives behind hardware controllers that previously reported nothing.
  • Alert engine now supports multiple thresholds per drive with different actions.
  • Reduced background resource use during continuous monitoring.
  • Report export layout cleaned up for fleet summaries.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Extract the archive.
  2. Disable real time protection while the licence step runs.
  3. Run the installer as administrator so it can access the drives directly.
  4. Apply the included licence component before launching.
  5. Open the application and let it complete its first scan of every attached drive.
  6. Set your temperature and health thresholds, then re-enable protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • It needs administrative rights to read drive attributes. Without them it reports almost nothing.
  • A portable build is included for use from a technician stick with no installation.
  • A health reading below a hundred percent is not automatically an emergency. Watch the trend rather than the single number.

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Does it work on external drives?
Yes, on most enclosures, though some bridge chipsets hide the attributes entirely.
Can it warn me automatically?
Yes, by message, sound, email or by running a command, which is how people trigger a backup on the first warning.
Does it support solid state drives?
Yes, including remaining endurance and total bytes written, which mechanical attributes do not cover.
