About this release

Overview

WinToUSB creates portable Windows installations on removable drives. Not installer media, which is what most tools produce, but a complete working system that boots from the stick and runs as a real installation, with your applications, settings and files travelling with it. Plug it into a different machine, boot from it, and the drivers sort themselves out for that hardware.

There are three sources it can build from. An installation image, so a fresh system is created directly onto the drive. A running system, cloned onto the drive so your current setup becomes portable. Or an existing portable drive, duplicated to another one. It supports both partition table styles and both firmware boot modes, and it can prepare a drive that boots on either without rebuilding it.

The practical use cases are recovery, support work and separation. A technician carries a known good system to diagnose machines that will not boot their own. A contractor works on a client machine without installing anything on it. Someone with one laptop keeps work and personal environments entirely separate on two sticks. It also builds ordinary installation media and can create a portable system from the versions of Windows that Microsoft never offered in a portable form.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Portable Windows on a removable drive

A complete working installation that boots and runs from a USB drive on any machine, not just installer media.

Clone a running system

Take the system currently installed on the machine and turn it into a portable drive with applications and settings intact.

Both firmware modes and partition styles

Prepare drives for legacy or UEFI booting, on either partition table style, or a hybrid that boots on both.

Installer media creation

Build ordinary bootable installation media from an image, with the boot mode chosen explicitly.

Drive to drive duplication

Copy an existing portable installation onto another drive, useful for deploying a prepared environment to several sticks.

Broad source support

Builds from installation images, from a running system, or from a mounted installation, with edition selection where the image contains several.

Changed in this build

Version 10.8.1.2

  • Faster writing on high speed drives through improved buffering.
  • Better handling of drives that report unusual sector sizes.
  • Added a verification pass after writing to confirm the resulting drive is bootable.
  • Improved driver injection when cloning to a drive intended for different hardware.
  • Fixed a case where cloning a system with a hidden recovery partition produced an unbootable result.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Extract the archive and pause real time protection.
  2. Run the installer as administrator, it needs low level disk access.
  3. Apply the included activation before launching.
  4. Start the program and confirm the full feature set is available.
  5. Choose a source, select the target drive, and confirm the drive letter carefully before starting.
  6. Restore protection once the write completes.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • The target drive is erased completely. Check the drive letter twice, this is the mistake that costs people data.
  • Use a fast solid state USB drive. A cheap flash stick technically works and is painfully slow in practice.
  • Portable installations do not activate on every machine they touch. Licensing for a portable system is its own question.

System requirements

Minimum and recommended

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Will it boot on any machine?
Most modern machines, provided the firmware allows USB booting and secure boot is handled appropriately.
Does it affect the host machine's drive?
No. The portable system runs entirely from the stick and does not write to the internal drive unless you tell it to.
How fast is it in use?
Entirely down to the drive. On a fast solid state USB drive it is close to an internal disk. On a cheap stick it is unusable.
