K-Lite Codec Pack Mega
Version 19.9.0 · Codec Guide · Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 · ranked #140 in the library
A curated bundle of the codecs, filters and a media player that between them play essentially any audio or video file you will meet, assembled and configured so the pieces cooperate instead of fighting.
Read the installation section below before you start. The order of the steps matters on this release.
About this release
Overview
A codec pack exists because a media file is only a container, and what is inside it can be encoded a hundred different ways. Windows plays some of those out of the box and stumbles on the rest. K-Lite gathers the decoders, splitters and filters that cover the formats the system does not, and, more importantly, configures them so they work together. A pile of codecs installed at random is how a machine ends up with green video and no sound. A curated pack is how you avoid that.
The Mega edition is the most complete of the tiers. It includes the codecs for the common and the obscure formats, the splitters that read the various container types, tools for inspecting and repairing files, and a bundled media player configured to use the pack correctly. It also sets up decoding for other players on the machine, so the video software you already prefer benefits from the same coverage without further setup.
The configuration is the real value. The installer offers sensible profiles for different kinds of user, sets hardware accelerated decoding where the machine supports it so high resolution video does not hammer the processor, and arranges the decoding priority so the right filter handles each format. A codec tweak tool is included for the rare case where a specific file needs the chain adjusted by hand.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Broad format coverage
Decoders and splitters for the common and the obscure audio and video formats and containers.
Configured to cooperate
The pieces are set up to work together, avoiding the broken playback that random codec installs cause.
Bundled and system wide player support
A media player configured to use the pack, plus decoding set up for other players already on the machine.
Hardware accelerated decoding
GPU decoding enabled where supported so high resolution video does not overload the processor.
Inspection and repair tools
Utilities for reading a file's internals and repairing a container that will not play.
Install profiles and codec tweak tool
Sensible profiles for different users and a manual tweak tool for the rare file that needs the chain adjusted.
Changed in this build
Version 19.9.0
- Updated bundled decoders to their current versions.
- Improved hardware decoding support on recent GPUs.
- Better default configuration for high frame rate and high dynamic range video.
- Reduced installer footprint while keeping the Mega coverage.
- Fixed a conflict with a common third party player's own decoders.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Uninstall any other codec packs first. Two packs on one machine is the main cause of broken playback.
- Extract the archive.
- Run the installer and choose an install profile that matches how you use the machine.
- Accept the recommended hardware decoding setting unless you have a reason not to.
- Finish setup and test a file of a format that did not play before.
- Use the tweak tool only if a specific file still misbehaves.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- Never run two codec packs at once. Remove any existing one before installing this.
- If a specific file plays with green video or no sound, the tweak tool adjusts the decoding chain for it.
- The bundled player is configured correctly out of the box. Other players get system wide decoding support.

Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Which edition is this?
- The Mega edition, the most complete tier, with the widest format coverage and the extra tools.
- Will it work with the player I already use?
- Yes, it sets up decoding system wide, so other players benefit from the same coverage.
