About this release
Overview
Edge runs on the same engine as Chrome, which means the compatibility story is identical and every extension from the Chrome store installs directly. What is different is the layer on top: vertical tabs down the side of the window, tab grouping and collections for gathering pages across sessions, split screen for two pages in one tab, and sleeping tabs that release memory from anything you have not touched in a while.
The efficiency work is the practical selling point on a laptop. Sleeping tabs suspend background pages and give the memory back, the efficiency mode throttles background activity when running on battery or when the battery is low, and startup boost keeps a minimal process warm so the window appears immediately. On a machine with thirty tabs open the memory difference against a stock Chromium build is substantial.
This package is the offline installer rather than the small web stub, so it installs on a machine with no connection and can be kept for redeployment. Enterprise policy support, profile separation with independent extensions and history per profile, an integrated PDF reader with annotation and read aloud, and full developer tools are all present. Import from another browser covers bookmarks, passwords, history and open tabs in one step.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Vertical tabs and tab management
Move the tab strip to the side where titles are actually readable, group tabs by colour and name, and save sets of pages as collections that persist across sessions.
Sleeping tabs and efficiency mode
Background tabs are suspended after a configurable idle period and their memory released, with an efficiency mode that throttles activity on battery power.
Full Chromium extension compatibility
Extensions from either store install and run identically, since the underlying engine and extension platform are the same.
Built in PDF reading and annotation
Open, annotate, highlight, sign and fill PDF documents in the browser, with read aloud for long documents.
Profile separation
Separate profiles with their own extensions, history, favourites and sessions, switchable from the toolbar, useful for keeping work and personal browsing apart.
Offline deployable installer
A complete installer rather than a downloader stub, suitable for machines without a connection and for keeping a known version on hand.

Release notes
From whoever packed it
- The offline installer does not include the updater service by default. Add it separately if you want automatic updates.
- Signing into a profile syncs favourites and passwords. Leave it signed out if the machine is shared.
