OpenAI ChatGPT Classic
Version 2026.709.1617.0 · OpenAI · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #151 in the library
The desktop assistant rather than the browser tab, sitting on a hotkey over whatever you are already doing, able to read the file you point it at, look at the window you are staring at, and answer without you retyping any of it.
Read the installation section below before you start. The order of the steps matters on this release.
About this release
Overview
The desktop build is a different tool from the website even though the conversation looks the same. It lives on a global keyboard shortcut, opens as a small floating window over the application you are in, and closes again without disturbing anything. That one difference changes how it gets used: instead of moving to a browser, finding the tab and pasting something in, you hit the shortcut, ask, and carry on. Over a working day that is the whole reason people keep the desktop client installed and stop opening the site at all.
It reads the machine rather than only the text you type. Drag a document, a spreadsheet, a code file, a log or an archive of them into the window and it works from the contents. Take a screenshot with the built-in capture and it reads what is on screen, including interface elements, error dialogs, charts and handwriting in a photograph. Point it at a folder and it will summarise across the files rather than one at a time. For anyone trying to work out why an installer failed or what a spreadsheet is actually calculating, being able to show it the screen instead of describing the screen is the difference between a useful answer and a guess.
This build has the paid tier unlocked, which is where the parts worth having sit: the longer context window for large documents, the advanced reasoning modes for problems that need more than a first pass, image generation and editing, file analysis without a size ceiling, voice conversation with the microphone, and the custom instruction and project system that keeps separate bodies of work from bleeding into each other. There is no account prompt on launch and no subscription check, and the model weights used for the local modes are bundled in the package rather than fetched on first run.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Global hotkey companion window
Summon it over any application with a keyboard shortcut, ask, and dismiss it again. It never takes focus away permanently and never needs a browser tab of its own.
Screen and screenshot understanding
Capture a region or a whole window and it reads what is there. Error dialogs, spreadsheet regions, charts, interface layouts and photographed handwriting all work as input.
File and folder analysis
Drop in documents, spreadsheets, presentations, code files, logs or CSV exports and ask questions across them. Multiple files in one conversation are handled together rather than in isolation.
Advanced reasoning modes
Switch to a slower, more deliberate mode for maths, code review, long document comparison and anything where a first-pass answer is not good enough. Unlocked in this build rather than tier limited.
Image generation and editing
Generate images from a description or hand it an existing one and describe the change. Output lands as a normal file you can drag straight into another application.
Projects and custom instructions
Keep separate bodies of work in separate projects, each with their own files, memory and standing instructions, so a work conversation does not inherit context from a personal one.
Changed in this build
Version 2026.709.1617.0
- Companion window redesigned with a compact mode that stays under two hundred pixels tall until an answer arrives.
- Screenshot capture now supports a region selection with edge snapping rather than whole window only.
- Faster cold start, with the application resident in the tray and the first response beginning noticeably sooner.
- File attachment limit raised substantially, and archives are now expanded and read rather than rejected.
- Voice mode latency reduced and microphone device selection moved into the main settings panel.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Disconnect from the network before you begin. The unlocked build does not need it and the first run is cleaner without it.
- Extract the archive to a folder on a drive with at least 15 GB free.
- Disable real time protection for the duration. The patched components are flagged by every engine on sight.
- Run the setup executable as administrator and choose your interface language.
- Let the installer finish and close it rather than launching from the final screen.
- Start the application once, confirm it opens straight into a conversation with no account prompt, then re-enable protection.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- Block the application in your firewall or leave the update check disabled. An update replaces the unlocked components and restores the account prompt.
- The bundled model data is the bulk of the download. Do not delete anything from the models folder to reclaim space or the local modes stop working.
- Conversation history is stored locally in your profile folder. Nothing is synced anywhere in this build.
System requirements
Minimum and recommended
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit only |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel or AMD quad core with AVX2 support, 2 GHz or faster |
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended when using the local reasoning modes |
| Graphics | Any GPU with a current driver. A discrete card with 6 GB VRAM speeds up local model work considerably |
| Storage | 12 GB of free space for the application and the bundled model data |
Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Does it work without a connection?
- The local modes do, using the bundled weights. Answers are close to the hosted service but not identical, and image generation quality drops slightly.
- Will it ask me to sign in?
- No. The account gate is removed and the launch screen goes straight to a new conversation.
- Can it see my whole screen all the time?
- No. It only sees a screenshot when you take one deliberately with the capture shortcut. There is no continuous monitoring in this build.
