Smadav Pro 2026
Version 15.8.2 · Smadav · Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (32-bit and 64-bit) · ranked #196 in the library
A lightweight second layer that sits beside your main protection rather than replacing it, focused on removable drives, shortcut infections and the hidden file tricks that spread between machines on a shared stick.

About this release
Overview
Smadav is built to run alongside an existing security product rather than instead of one. Most protection suites refuse to coexist with another resident scanner, and this is engineered specifically not to conflict: it uses a small resident component with its own detection approach and deliberately narrow scope, so both can be installed on the same machine without fighting over drivers or file access.
Its focus is removable media. USB sticks passed between machines are still one of the most common ways a small office infects itself repeatedly, and this targets that path specifically. Inserting a drive triggers an automatic scan, hidden and system attributed files are exposed, shortcut style infections where real folders are hidden behind link files are repaired in place, and autorun entries on the drive are neutralised before anything can execute from them.
The Pro tier removes the advertising panel, unlocks the manual update mechanism so definitions can be applied offline, adds scheduled scanning, an administrative password on the settings panel and a themeable interface, and increases the aggressiveness of the resident component. The whole application is a few megabytes and the resident piece uses very little memory, which is why it stays viable on the old low specification machines where this problem is most common.
What it does
Feature breakdown
Coexists with your main protection
Designed as a second layer with a narrow scope, so it installs alongside a full security suite without driver conflicts or file access contention.
Automatic removable drive scanning
Any inserted stick or external drive is scanned on connection, with autorun entries neutralised before anything can execute from the volume.
Shortcut infection repair
Restores folders hidden behind link files and clears the hidden and system attributes that infections set, without deleting the real data underneath.
Offline definition updates
Definition packages can be applied manually from a file, which keeps isolated machines current without ever connecting them to a network.
Scheduled and on demand scanning
Full volume, selected folder and removable media scans, with a scheduler for unattended runs outside working hours.
Very low resource use
The resident component uses a few megabytes of memory and negligible processor time, so it stays practical on old and low specification hardware.
Changed in this build
Version 15.8.2
- Detection updated for the current generation of removable drive infection techniques.
- Shortcut repair now restores original folder attributes rather than leaving them visible but flagged.
- Scheduler rewritten with proper missed run handling when the machine is off at the scheduled time.
- Interface refreshed with additional themes and correct scaling on high density displays.
- Reduced false positives on portable applications run from removable media.
Installation
Follow these in order
- Extract the archive to any folder.
- Add the folder to your main security product's exclusion list before running the installer.
- Run setup as administrator and complete the short installation.
- Open the application and confirm the Pro panel is present with advertising removed.
- Set the removable media policy and the scan schedule in settings.
- Restore full protection on your main product and confirm both run together without conflict.
Release notes
From whoever packed it
- This is a second layer, not a replacement. Keep your primary protection installed and running.
- Definition updates can be applied from a file, so isolated machines stay current without a connection.
- Set the administrative password in settings on shared machines so the resident component cannot be disabled casually.

Questions about this release
Answered before you ask
- Will it conflict with my antivirus?
- No. It is built specifically to coexist, with a narrow scope and no competing file system driver.
- Can it replace a full security product?
- No, and it does not claim to. Its coverage is deliberately focused on removable media and the infections that spread through it.
- Does it need a connection for updates?
- No. Definitions can be applied from a downloaded file on an otherwise isolated machine.
