About this release

Overview

The reason VueScan exists is that scanner manufacturers abandon drivers long before the hardware wears out. A flatbed or film scanner that cost a fortune and still produces excellent results becomes a paperweight the moment the system it was written for is gone. VueScan writes its own drivers and talks to the hardware directly, which brings a very long list of discontinued devices back to life on a current machine without the manufacturer being involved at all.

For film it is not just a rescue tool, it is the better option outright. Negative inversion handles the orange base properly with per-stock profiles rather than a generic invert, infrared cleaning uses the scanner's fourth channel to detect and remove dust and scratches without touching image detail, multi-pass scanning averages several passes to pull shadow detail out of dense slides, and multi-exposure combines a normal and a long exposure into one file for extended dynamic range. Batch scanning walks a whole feeder or film holder unattended with automatic frame detection and file naming.

The professional edition is what this listing covers and the differences matter. It writes raw scan files that preserve everything the sensor captured so a scan can be reprocessed later without going back to the original, includes the full IT8 colour calibration workflow with target support for accurate colour, adds the complete OCR language set for document work, and removes the limits the standard edition puts on output size and batch handling. Output goes to TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, multi-page PDF and raw DNG.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Its own scanner drivers

Direct hardware support for a very large number of flatbed, film, sheet-fed and multi-function scanners, including many discontinued models with no current manufacturer driver.

Film and negative processing

Per-stock negative profiles for correct base removal, slide handling, and colour balance that starts from something sensible rather than from a generic inversion.

Infrared dust and scratch removal

Uses the scanner's infrared channel to map physical defects and remove them without softening or smearing genuine image detail.

Multi-pass and multi-exposure scanning

Average several passes to reduce sensor noise, or combine two exposures into one file to hold both shadow and highlight detail on dense originals.

Raw scan files and reprocessing

Save the unprocessed sensor data as a raw file so the same scan can be re-developed later with different settings without touching the original.

Batch scanning and OCR

Unattended feeder and film holder batches with automatic frame detection, naming templates, and searchable multi-page PDF output through the full OCR language set.

Changed in this build

Version 9.8.56

  • Support added for a further batch of recent flatbed and document scanners.
  • Improved automatic frame detection on medium format film holders with uneven spacing.
  • Faster preview generation at high optical resolutions on USB connected devices.
  • Colour negative profiles expanded with several additional current and discontinued film stocks.
  • Fixed a fault where a batch scan could stall on a feeder misfeed instead of prompting and resuming.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Connect the scanner and power it on before installing so the driver step can see it.
  2. Extract the archive.
  3. Disable real time protection for the install.
  4. Run the installer and let it place its own driver components. Do not uninstall the manufacturer driver first, the two coexist.
  5. Apply the included licence step, then start the application.
  6. Confirm the professional options appear in the output tab, then re-enable protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • If the scanner is not detected, unplug and replug it after the install so the driver binds on a fresh enumeration.
  • Raw scan files are large. A single high resolution medium format scan can run to several hundred megabytes.
  • Automatic updates are disabled in this build. An update reverts the licence state.

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Will it work with my old scanner?
If the device is on the supported list, yes, regardless of whether the manufacturer still ships a driver for it. The application does not use the manufacturer driver.
What does the professional edition add?
Raw scan file output, IT8 colour calibration, the full OCR language set, and no limits on output size or batch handling.
Does infrared cleaning work on black and white film?
Not on traditional silver based black and white. The silver grains block infrared. It works on colour negative, slide film and chromogenic black and white.
