ZBrush

Version 2026.2.1 · Maxon Computer · Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · ranked #78 in the library

A digital sculpting program that behaves like clay rather than like a modeller, where you push, pull, pinch and carve millions of polygons by hand, which is how the detailed characters and creatures in film and games actually get made.

About this release

Overview

ZBrush is sculpting rather than modelling. Instead of pushing vertices and edges around, you work on the surface with brushes as if it were clay, and the program carries tens of millions of polygons so the detail can go all the way down to pores and fabric weave. That approach is why it took over character and creature work in film and games. An artist sculpts the form the way a traditional sculptor would, and the technical geometry is sorted out afterwards.

Its way of handling that much detail is what sets it apart. Dynamic tessellation adds resolution where you are working, subdivision levels let you move between a rough form and fine detail without losing either, and the sculpting brushes each behave differently enough that building a face, a scale pattern or a folded cloth are all direct rather than fiddly. Masking, polygroups and the deformation tools let you pose and reshape a finished sculpt without breaking the detail.

It is a complete pipeline for the sculpting stage. It retopologises a dense sculpt into a clean mesh for animation, bakes the fine detail into normal and displacement maps, paints colour directly onto the surface, and exports to every downstream application. This build installs the full application with the complete brush and tool set and activation in place.

What it does

Feature breakdown

Clay style sculpting

Push, pull, pinch and carve the surface with brushes as if it were clay, carrying tens of millions of polygons for fine detail.

Dynamic resolution

Tessellation adds geometry where you work and subdivision levels move between rough form and fine detail without losing either.

Deep brush set

A large set of sculpting brushes each tuned for a different job, from broad form to skin pores and cloth folds.

Retopology and detail baking

Turn a dense sculpt into a clean animation mesh and bake the detail into normal and displacement maps.

Polypaint

Paint colour directly onto the surface at any resolution without needing a texture map first.

Posing and deformation

Mask, group and deform a finished sculpt to pose or reshape it without breaking the detail.

Changed in this build

Version 2026.2.1

  • New sculpting brushes added to the default set.
  • Faster performance on very high polygon sculpts.
  • Improved retopology tools for cleaner animation meshes.
  • Better displacement map baking accuracy.
  • Several interface refinements to speed common sculpting tasks.

Installation

Follow these in order

  1. Go offline.
  2. Extract the archive to a local drive.
  3. Disable real time protection.
  4. Run setup as administrator and complete the install.
  5. Apply the included activation step before first launch.
  6. Open ZBrush, confirm the full tool set is present, then re-enable protection.
Expect a detection. Anything that changes how a program checks its licence is classified as a risk tool by every scanning engine, which is why the steps ask you to pause protection. If that is not something you want to do, this is not the right download for you.

Release notes

From whoever packed it

  • The sculpting engine leans on the processor and memory more than the GPU. Cores and RAM matter most.
  • Save incrementally on heavy sculpts. A multi-million polygon file is large and worth versioning.
  • Block the update check so the activation is not undone.

System requirements

Minimum and recommended

Operating systemWindows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit
Processor64-bit Intel or AMD, multicore recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for very high polygon sculpts
GraphicsAny GPU with a current driver, the sculpting engine is largely processor bound
Storage10 GB for the application

Questions about this release

Answered before you ask

Does it retopologise for animation?
Yes, it turns a dense sculpt into a clean low polygon mesh and bakes the detail into maps.
Can it paint colour?
Yes, polypaint applies colour directly to the surface without needing a texture map first.
Is it GPU heavy?
No, the sculpting engine is mostly processor and memory bound, so cores and RAM matter more than the graphics card.
